Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for process control room operations
   • Access, interpret and apply process control room operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
   • Select and wear correct personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Establish and maintain communications with other personnel using approved communication methods
   • Check maintenance and operating records and document outstanding maintenance inspections and identified defects
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
2. Perform start-up operations
   • Confirm plant readiness for operation
   • Complete computer systems and equipment pre-start checks
   • Carry out start-up checks and procedures according to plant configurations and system requirements
   • Start-up individual plant and process and entire system
   • Build production rate steadily with no surges and lulls
   • Stabilise plant operation to meet process output and quality requirements
3. Monitor and manage operations
   • Monitor and manage processing utilising appropriate indicators for safe and efficient operations
   • Read and interpret data from equipment indicators, programmable logic and SCADA, and take action where required to maintain operations according to operating parameters
   • Identify, manage and report faults to appropriate personnel in a timely manner
   • Coordinate support personnel and ensure continuity of process
   • Manage material flow within specified parameters
   • Respond to alarms , investigate conditions, and take corrective actions
   • Complete the work plan
   • Maintain, process and pass on written records and reports
4. Conduct housekeeping activities
   • Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
   • Clean and maintain condition of equipment, ensure suitability for use, and address/report issues
   • Manage/report hazards, and maintain a safe working environment
   • Process written records
5. Shutdown in sequence and/or isolate plant and equipment
   • Shutdown/isolate plant and equipment based on process or safety requirements
   • Perform post shutdown/isolation checks

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient performing of process control room operations including:

conducting prestart, start up and shut-down operations

applying diagnostic and problem solving techniques

using alarm/monitoring and control systems

applying hazard identification and management procedures

accessing, reading and interpreting reports

using computer and database management systems

accessing, reading and interpreting plans, reports, specifications

conducting operations monitoring

identifying and reporting defects

works effectively with others to undertake control room operations that meet all of the required outcomes including:

using a range of communications techniques and equipment to convey information to others

complying with written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

clarifying work requirements and instructions

inspecting and preparing work area and equipment

demonstrates completion of performing process control room operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

completing work plan

carry out pre-start, start up and shutdown procedures

start up individual plant, process and entire system

stabilise plant operations

coordinate support personnel

manage material flow

identify and respond to alarms and signals

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in performing process control room operations through:

addressing contaminant issues

equipment processes, limitations and operating parameters

operating distribution control system

hazardous goods procedures and consequences of spills

repair requirements

using metallurgical and technical data (basic)

optimal plant capacity and throughput

physical layout of plant
